Free up storage for downloads

SnaqTik · 2026-10-07

Downloads fail quietly when storage is full. The biggest quick win is often TikTok's own cache, which can grow to several gigabytes. Here are safe clean-ups in order of impact.

1. Clear TikTok's cache (often 1–5 GB)

In TikTok: Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Free up space → Cache → Clear. This removes temporary files only; your account, drafts and likes are untouched. Do not clear "Downloads" in the same screen if you keep drafts there.

2. Remove duplicate downloads

Saving the same clip twice creates files like video (1).mp4. Sort the Download folder by name and delete the copies.

3. Move old clips off the phone

  • Copy them to a computer (see transferring to a computer).
  • Or back them up to Google Photos / iCloud and use Free up space / Optimise iPhone Storage to keep only small previews locally.

4. Built-in cleaners

Android: Files by Google → Clean suggests junk, large files and duplicates. iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage lists the biggest apps and offers to offload unused ones.

How much do I need?

Leave at least 1–2 GB free; phones slow down and downloads fail below that. One HD clip is usually 10–40 MB — see file sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Will clearing TikTok's cache delete my drafts?

Clearing the cache does not. Uninstalling TikTok does delete local drafts — see backing up drafts.

Are "cleaner" apps from the store useful?

Mostly not. Built-in tools do the same without ads or extra permissions.

Does saving MP3 instead of video save space?

Yes, a lot — an MP3 is 10–20 times smaller than the video.
