H.264 vs HEVC explained
SnaqTik · 2026-10-07
A codec is the method used to squeeze video into a small file. TikTok mostly uses H.264 (plays on everything) and sometimes HEVC/H.265 (smaller files, but not every device can play it).
The difference in one line
HEVC can store the same picture in roughly half the data of H.264, but it needs newer hardware or software to decode. H.264 is older, slightly bigger, and plays practically anywhere.
Who can play what
| Device | H.264 | HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad / Mac (recent) | Yes | Yes |
| Android phones (recent) | Yes | Most |
| Windows PC | Yes | Needs the HEVC extension from Microsoft Store, or VLC |
| Smart TVs from USB | Yes | Newer models |
| Web editors & old laptops | Yes | Often no |
Symptoms of an HEVC problem
- Sound plays but the picture is black or frozen.
- The player says "codec not supported".
- An editor imports the file but shows a blank clip.
Fixes
- Download the standard MP4 option instead of HD — it is more often H.264.
- Play the file in VLC, which decodes both.
- On Windows, install Microsoft's HEVC Video Extension.
More playback fixes: downloaded video won't play.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which codec my file uses?
VLC → Tools → Codec Information, or MediaInfo (free) on any computer. Look for "AVC/H.264" or "HEVC/H.265".
Does SnaqTik convert codecs?
No. SnaqTik saves the file TikTok provides, so quality is never lost to re-encoding.
Is HEVC better quality?
At the same file size, yes. But for TikTok downloads the difference you can see is small; compatibility usually matters more.
