Downloaded video won't play?

SnaqTik · 2026-10-07

When a saved TikTok refuses to play, the file is usually incomplete, uses a codec your player lacks, or ended up with the wrong file extension. Here is how to tell which, and the fix for each.

Step 1: is the download finished?

Look at the file size. A file of a few KB, or one ending in .crdownload, .part or .download, is unfinished. Delete it and download again on a stable connection (see slow or stuck downloads).

Step 2: does it play in VLC?

Install VLC (free on every platform) and open the file there. If it plays, the file is fine and your default player is the problem — usually HEVC on older PCs. See H.264 vs HEVC.

Step 3: check the extension

A video must end in .mp4. If your browser saved it as .bin, .htm or with no extension, rename it to name.mp4. On phones, use the Files app's Rename.

Step 4: platform-specific causes

  • iPhone: a video in Files may play there but not appear in Photos until you use Save Video — see Safari downloads.
  • Android: a full storage can truncate files silently.
  • TV: many TVs only play H.264 from USB.

Step 5: try the other option

Download the standard MP4 if HD failed, or vice versa. Different versions can use different codecs.

Frequently asked questions

The video plays but the picture is green or blocky — why?

That is a decoding problem, often hardware acceleration in the player. In VLC, turn off hardware decoding in Preferences → Input/Codecs.

Can a downloaded MP4 contain a virus?

A plain MP4 is media, not a program. Be careful with files ending in .exe, .apk or .scr — SnaqTik never serves those.

Do I need to pay for a player?

No. VLC, mpv and the built-in players are free.
