JPEG vs WebP vs HEIC
SnaqTik · 2026-10-07
Photos from TikTok slideshows usually come as JPEG or WebP. iPhones shoot in HEIC. All three are fine — the only question is which apps can open them.
The three formats
| JPEG (.jpg) | WebP (.webp) | HEIC (.heic) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made for | Everything since 1992 | The web (Google) | Phones (Apple default) |
| File size | Baseline | ~25–35% smaller | ~50% smaller |
| Opens on phones | Yes | Yes (modern) | iPhone yes, Android mostly |
| Opens on Windows | Yes | Yes (Photos app) | Needs extension |
| Old software / printers | Yes | Sometimes no | Often no |
If a WebP will not open
- Open it in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display WebP.
- On a PC, Paint and the Photos app can open it and Save as JPEG.
- On a Mac, Preview → File → Export → JPEG.
Printing and sharing
Photo kiosks and older printers expect JPEG. Convert once, then print. For sharing in chat apps, any of the three works.
Save slideshow photos with the photo & slideshow tool; to turn them into a video, see saving slideshows as video.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting WebP to JPEG lose quality?
A little, as with any re-save of a lossy format. Choose a high quality setting (90%+) and it is not visible.
Why are TikTok photos smaller than my camera photos?
TikTok resizes and compresses images for fast loading. You get the version TikTok stores.
Can I set a TikTok photo as wallpaper?
Yes — any of these formats works as a phone wallpaper on modern devices.
