Check a downloaded file is safe
SnaqTik · 2026-10-07
Media files like .mp4, .mp3 and .jpg are data, not programs. The danger is files that only pretend to be videos. A 30-second check of the extension, size and source catches almost every trick.
1. Look at the full file name
Turn on file extensions so you see the real ending. On Windows: File Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions. Watch for double endings like video.mp4.exe — the last part is what counts.
2. Does the size make sense?
A 30-second TikTok is a few megabytes (see file sizes). A "video" of 300 KB, or a ZIP of 80 MB, is suspicious.
3. Where did it come from?
Check your browser's download list: it shows the site each file came from. Files from SnaqTik are served from snaqtik.com (or TikTok's own media servers).
4. Scan if in doubt
- Windows: right-click → Scan with Microsoft Defender.
- Mac: Gatekeeper blocks unsigned apps; a media file never needs "Open anyway".
- Android: Play Protect scans installed apps; just never install an APK you did not expect.
- Any device: upload a suspicious file to VirusTotal for a second opinion.

Frequently asked questions
Can an MP4 file infect my phone?
Plain media files cannot run code by themselves. Keep your phone and player updated so rare player bugs are patched.
My browser warns "this file may be dangerous" — should I worry?
For an MP4 from a known site, it is usually an over-cautious warning. If the file is not a media file, delete it.
Is VirusTotal private?
Files you upload are shared with security companies. Do not upload personal documents.
