What is Douyin?

Douyin (抖音) is the app that started it all. ByteDance launched it in China in September 2016, a full year before TikTok reached the rest of the world. Why the links look different (douyin.com & v.douyin.com)

Because the two apps live on different domains, their share links never overlap. A TikTok link looks like tiktok.com/@username/video/1234… or a short vm.tiktok.com/xxxx redirect. A Douyin link is built on douyin.com instead: the web player uses douyin.com/video/1234…, and the app's Share button hands you a shortened v.douyin.com link that expands to that same video.

Those v.douyin.com short links are the ones most people copy, because they drop straight out of the Share sheet. They are safe to paste as-is — a good downloader follows the redirect for you.
